Over the past few years, technology has expanded and advanced exponentially. At Nooya Lake Technologies, we want to ensure that everyone has digital equity, which is a strategy to ensure that all users, patients, and individuals can access the needed education, safety, medical, social services, and employment services they need. Digital equity is a crucial concept because it focuses on enabling every person to participate in and access the benefits of the digital world. We work to ensure technology includes everyone.

Accessibility: Services must be designed to meet all users’ needs, including those dependent on assistive technology to access digital services.

Affordability: Nooya Lake Technologies wants to focus on providing underserved and native communities, but technology services need affordable solutions that can still meet community needs. Technology and its different components—devices, software, and internet access—must be affordable to every person to ensure digital equity.

Training: Access does not always mean there is digital equity. Nooya Lake Technologies will provide training and learning opportunities to demonstrate using digital devices (such as computers or smartphones and the internet) to ensure access and knowledge to create digital equity in the services and the community.

Connectivity: Having an infrastructure in place will allow greater access to the internet through broadband, wi-fi, and mobile technologies.

Privacy: Privacy and security are also crucial aspects of digital equity. Technology needs to ensure that the user, the business, or the community can expect a level of privacy and security that will not harm their lives.

Digital equity is necessary as more essential services and activities move their presence online. Historically, underserved communities, marginalized populations, and native groups experience a lack of access to affordable and reliable digital solutions. Designing and implementing technology that meets the needs of these populations is a fundamental step forward to improving digital equity. By creating the Ketchikan Innovation Hub, Nooya Lake Technologies has already started on the pathway to digital equity and digital health equity.

Nooya Lake Technologies manages and operates the Ketchikan Innovation Hub. The Ketchikan Innovation Hub was created to develop emerging smart technologies that provide, enhance, and strengthen native communities. Ketchikan Innovation Hub will bring advanced technologies to help indigenous peoples globally, and one of its first endeavors is to bring Smart City technologies to Ketchikan, Alaska.
